The SHS Swim team closed their season at the OSSAA State Swim Championship with the boys placing 6th overall and the girls placing 14th. The event took place at the Jenks Aquatic Center February 24-25. The boys relay team, including Alex Kim, Aiden Kim, Elias Mendez and Cale Wallin, placed 4th in the 200 medley relay and 7th in the 400 free relay.
The girls relay team, including Alexis Dotter, Danee Sisneros, Ella Clark, Isabella Genevro and Brannigan Wieman placed 13th in the 200 free relay.
Senior Alex Kim said he closed out his high school swim career with personal growth in multiple areas.
“I’ve progressed a lot, not only with my times but also with my character,” Kim said.
Having one senior on the girls team and two seniors on the boys team graduating, Coach Angela Knott plans to carry this momentum into the next season.
“I think the boys team will continue to have great success next year even though we are losing Alex Kim,” Knott said. “The girls team is young and will get better and better as we continue to train and spend more time in the water.”
Junior Elias Mendez finished his junior year strong, breaking five records this season.
“It feels good,” Mendez said. “I did a lot of training and a lot of mental work. I swam around for six hours a day.”
