The Stillwater Lady Pioneers soccer team made it to the Stillwater Cup Championship game on Friday, where they lost to Bishop Kelley 3-0. They got to the championship game by beating Holland Hall and Coweta.
Overall, Head Coach Tanner Rivera said the team played well in the tournament they hosted.
“We played some good teams and played well overall,” Coach Rivera said.
In the first game of the tournament, Sophomore Sophia Jahanshahi scored in the first half against Holland Hall, with the assist by Senior Captain Allie Luckett. In the second half, Holland Hall committed a foul in the box, and Sophomore Mwende Abai made the PK.
In the Semi-Final against Coweta, Senior Captain Karsen Cox scored on an assist by Abai, who also scored a goal in the 2-1 win.
Even though they didn’t get the championship win, Cox said the team did great.
“Even with the loss, I thought we did great in the Stillwater Cup, although I think we could’ve easily beat a few teams with more goals,” Cox said.
Looking at the rest of the season, Jahanshahi said she thinks the team will have success.
“I think if our team has the right mindset, we will definitely make it to the playoffs and maybe farther,” she said.
Coach Rivera said he feels confident that the team will do great in district games, which start today against U.S Grant at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
“I think we have a really good chance at making playoffs for the first time in six years, and possibly even finish with a #1 or #2 seed and host a playoff game,” Coach Rivera said.
