Stillwater Wrestling senior Dee Lockett and sophomore Ignacio Villasenor came out on top at this year’s Who’s Number 1 tournament in Pennsylvania, winning big against the nation’s top competitors in September.
The event was packed with intense matches, and those in attendance witnessed the duo’s skills. At the end of the competition, Lockett and Villasenor placed first in their respective weight classes. Lockett wrestled above his weight class at 175 pounds, while Villasenor competed at 113 pounds.
Lockett said the competition was one of the most fun and successful events he has been to.
“All the time and work that I put in helped me compete as well as I did,” he said.
Villasenor agreed and said experiencing the event with his Pioneer teammate was a great experience.
“We gave it everything, and it is amazing to be here with Dee,” he said. “Not only did Dee win ‘Whos Number 1’ at 165, he also bumped up and won it at 175 pounds, which is an incredible accomplishment for Dee.”
Pioneer Wrestling Head Coach Ethan Kyle also made the trip and got to coach both of the Pioneers at Who’s Number 1.
“It was a huge honor being able to get to coach these two special athletes at such a great event with great wrestlers from all over the country,” Kyle said.
Both wrestlers are looking forward to the upcoming wrestling season. Lockett is looking for his fourth state championship, while Villasenor has his eyes on his first state championship of his high school career.
