It’s the holiday season, which means that many Americans are pulling out those decorations and watching their favorite holiday movies again.
Every year, though, there’s a slew of new holiday movies coming out, but most just can’t replicate the feelings that classics such as Home Alone, Elf and The Polar Express elicit. Red One skims around this instead and keeps the audience interested with its comedy and light action.
The plot is a bit stereotypical, other than the villain’s motive of punishing any naughty-listers, which I still found lacking in the way it was used. They do this by using a magic snowglobe that sends you into a tiny indestructible cell for an undefined period of time. We only see them use the snowglobe a few times and it never really felt like a major threat.
The lore is very interesting though, with military protection yearly from the US, and Krampus’ German Castle with his year-round celebration of Krampusnacht.
Dwayne Johnson’s character, Callum Drift, was a bit predictable but still fun. Callum is a bodyguard for Mr. Claus and is thinking about retiring because of the massive amount of people on the naughty list.
I really would’ve preferred a bit more of Santa and Grýla’s (the main villain, played by Kiernan Shipka) snowmen thugs in the film, though. In closing, it’s a decent movie to go see, but I’d stick to the classics if you want a good holiday movie to watch.
3/5 Stars. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
