National Honors Society is a prestigious organization with a chapter at Stillwater High School that promotes community and serving others.
NHS members’ most recent project is volunteering at the Winter Carnival, hosted by the Junior Class, on January 11.
“We are staying busy at NHS while still being mindful of the holidays,” NHS president, Emalee Gilliland said.
NHS is open to juniors and seniors with a 3.75 cumulative GPA. Club sponsors go through applications at the beginning of the year for only the Junior and Senior classes.
Though Sophomores can’t apply to be a part of NHS until their Junior year, club sponsor Ms. Richardson said, they can always start preparing to submit their applications early.
Before applying, there are a few things to keep in mind.
“The best advice I can give is to be descriptive in your application,” Richardson said. “Your name is removed from your application, so all the faculty council sees is what you write.”
Tricia Klopfenstein, the other NHS sponsor, is there to assist Richardson in the application process.
“There are three essay questions students have to answer,” Klopfenstein said. “They discuss leadership, school service and community service. If students mess up on two of the questions, they don’t typically get in.”
