SHS sophomore Hope Miller has a hidden love for drawing, even as she struggles with a common disability.
Although she does not often talk about it, Miller struggles with a hindering condition: she is partially colorblind. This trait often leads her to draw in pencil or pen, allowing her to create artwork without worrying about her color choice.
With her friends, she said she is best known for her drawings of celebrities such as Bob Marley, Lil Peep, NBA Youngboy and Tupac, but enjoys the freedom of her landscapes.
“I was colorblind, and so I began to draw things where it didn’t matter what color was what,” Miller said.
Miller said her artwork is usually accurate to her reference photos.
“I’m good at drawing everything on the face except for straight hair,” she said.
When asked about what inspires her, Miller said inspiration can come from watching a movie.
“A person just pops in my head and I go, ‘Oh, hey!’ and then draw them, or, sometimes when I’m watching a movie I’ll find a person in it that I like and pause the movie to draw them,” she said.
Miller expressed her enthusiasm for drawing Corey Taylor of Slipknot but noted that she has also created 14 portraits of Tupac when inspired by requests from her friends. Sometimes she ventures into a more abstract art style, creating “trippy” landscapes.
Despite her disability, Miller continues to create artwork that she is proud of for herself, friends, and family. She does not intend to enter any art competitions but said, “I might change my mind, though.”
