Mx. Darin, Colorguard/Winterguard Director and Choreographer
Q: How long have you been performing and directing color guard?
A: I started performing in marching arts (combination of clarinet & color guard) in 1998 and aged out of drum corps in 2005. Then I picked up directing the following summer 2006
Q: How did you come up with the themes “Break The Code” and “Dandelions”
A: Blue | Break the Code – The last couple of summers I’ve become a fan of EuroVision. If you enjoy pop music I encourage you to check it out. The past summer’s winner had a song entitled “The Code,” and it had amazing energy. If I can hear a song for the first time and start seeing the song come to life, then I know it has potential to be a great show. “Break the Code” is about being comfortable with breaking free of societal norms…but we do with high camp.
Gold | Dandelion – We made the effort to start inspired by floral motifs for this show and on our journey through many songs we landed upon this one. Apart from being catchy, the dichotomy of the soft gentility of each verse and aggressiveness exuded in the chorus spoke to me as how many of us feel in our formative years.
Q: What are your expectations for Winter Guard this year?
A: Like any other season my expectations are for each member to grow in ability and character. Winning is fun, but being good at your craft is even more fun.
Q: What has directing SHS’s Winter Guard and Color Guard meant to you?.
A: It’s been a great journey helping to rebuild SCG after the pandemic, but I wouldn’t trade the bonds and relationships I’ve developed with our members, staff, and extended band family.
