The Stillwater Girls Golf Team will go into this spring as the reigning state champions. Coming off of a dominant postseason performance the year before, the team is hoping to go back to back this year.
Coach Brandon Reavis said he enjoyed being the coach of these girls and everything that has come with it.
“Coaching the Lady Pioneers has been an adventure I never expected,” Coach Reavis said. “I have enjoyed working with both new golfers and the kids with lots of experience during the seasons.”
He said he loved watching the girls’ hard work pay off.
“Watching the hard work and dedication was amazing as they paid off all that hard work last year with their big win,” he said. “The varsity girls were self-motivated and always doing what they were supposed to without being asked by their coaches.”
After a remarkable season last spring, the girls steamrolled through the competition at regionals, winning by a large margin of 33 strokes. The girls went on to win the OSSAA 6A Girls State Championship by 11 strokes over Jenks High School.
Senior Amy Reavis said winning the state title last year was one of her greatest experiences in high school.
“It was a great experience, especially being able to win with all my friends,” Reavis said. “It was especially special because it was the first girls state title in school history.”
Sophomore Maggie Ruby said that having all of her friends watch state at home was a cool experience.
“It felt really great,” Ruby said. “It was really fun to be there with everyone supporting us. It was just a lot of fun.”
Ruby was just a freshman when she won state. She said the pressure made it a little harder, but she fought through.
“Since 6th grade, people were expecting us to win, so there was a lot of pressure,” Ruby said. “Knowing how good the other teams were, I knew it was going to be hard, but I’m happy how it turned out.”
As far as setting post-season goals, Reavis has eyes on making state again and performing well.
“I hope to get in the top ten again,” Reavis said.
