The Stillwater Pioneer boys soccer team made it all the way to the championship game of the Stillwater Cup game, but came up short with a 5-0 loss to Deer Creek. On the road to the finals, the Pioneers beat Victory Christian 3-1 and Bishop Kelly 5-1.
Senior Brodey Long led the pioneers in scoring, connecting on three goals in the first two games of the tournament.
“Definitely boosts my confidence on finishing goals and taking on people throughout the game,” Long said.
The Stillwater Cup is a tournament hosted by the Pioneers that takes place before the start of the district games. In the first game of the tournament against Victory Christian, Ryan Brassfield had an assist to Long for a goal in the first half. Senior Diego Ortega made it 2-1 after a successful free kick, and Junior Graham Condley had an assist to Senior Colt Campbell to solidify the win.
In the semi final game against Bishop Kelly, the scorers were Campbell, Luis Jonguitud, Long with two and Condley. Mason Shepherd and Condley had assists in the win.
Senior Tristan Anderson only allowed two goals in the team’s tournament victories.
“It shows me that I’m able to back up my team if the ball were to get past our back line,” Anderson said.
The Pioneers season is just getting started, with their first district game of the season tonight against U.S. Grant at 8 p.m. inside Pioneer Stadium. They have several big games coming up, including Senior Night against Union
