The Stillwater Unified Cheer team, a team composed of both JV and special olympians, is seeing a lot of success in only its second year.
One of the coaches for the team, Coach Finks, said the team’s growth this season has been phenomenal.
“The team has worked very hard for every competition and they go out and try their best,” Finks said.
The team practices on Wednesdays at the junior high, and the season lasts for the duration of the school year. Finks said there are no try outs, and everyone is welcome.
Bonnie Rutherford, high school junior and unified cheer team member, has been cheering since last semester.
“[My favorite part is ] seeing friends,” Rutherford said.
Sophomore Brittany Mitchell has been cheering on the unified cheer team for two years.
“[My favorite skill is ] a toe touch,” Mitchell said.
This year in October, they placed 2nd and qualified to compete at State. After competing at State, the team was ranked 6th. Most recently in February, the team placed 2nd and qualified for the Special Olympics Summer Games in May.
