There is a new program to help students and teachers at Stillwater High School with stress, and it has four paws, a wagging tail and a slobbery smile.
The Paws for Pioneers has arrived at the high school in the form of Scooter, a therapy dog that visits the school on most Monday mornings and during the lunch hour, SHS Principal Mr. Howell said. The high school has learned that many people enjoy being around dogs.
“[Scooter] provides smiles and comfort to anyone who wants to say hello,” Howell said. “The dogs lower blood pressure, help students relax and generally make the day a little bit better.”
According to the Paws for Pioneers website, it is their mission to provide emotional, social and academic support through the introduction and interaction of therapy-certified dogs in Stillwater Public Schools.
They say this approach has proven to improve student motivation and foster academic success, while lowering stress and anxiety.
Junior Joe Reese is one of the students who benefits from having Scooter at the high school.
“I like how the dog feels and reacts when I interact with it,” Reese said. “[I think Scooter] is very helpful for teachers and students.”
