Ms. Miller has one goal with the students in her class: To take them from where they are to where they can be.
The eight students in Ms. Miller’s special education class are challenged to expand on what they know and what they can do.
“My students are with me all day long, which allows us to be purposeful in all that we do. I try to include a little bit of every subject based on completion into their days to expand their minds,” Miller said.
Miller became an educator 32 years ago, but most of her years have been focused on being a behavior and autism specialist and training new teachers. She had originally started in a daycare where she found she was good at managing distraught children, and she continued to pursue that career.
There are five teacher assistants that help and support Miller and her students throughout the day. They assist her by helping with the handling of physical and emotional needs.
“Ms. Miller has taught me how to be patient and kind to everyone in every circumstance. Watching these students succeed in something they have been working at is my favorite part of my job,” said Ms.Gene Ann, one of Miller’s teacher assistants.
One student in Miller’s class has learned how to write his name while in her class.
“My favorite thing about Ms. Miller is that she is a great teacher and she cares for us,” senior student Reese McBroom said.
