After a blow out 65-0 win against U.S. Grant last Thursday, it would be easy for the Pioneers to get over confident going into practice this week.
However, wide receiver Deakon Jones, who scored two touchdowns in two and a half minutes in the first quarter, said he must stay humble and focus on what is ahead of him.
“I don’t really think of it like that,” Jones said. “I just got to stay level headed.”
The Pioneers found success on the other side of the ball as well, with interrupted passes and big stops to shut out the Generals in an important road game.
With a big home game coming up this week against NW Classen, defensive back Ares Willis said to improve, the team needs to finish.
“Just [finish] tackles, [wrap] up tackles, and just overall [finish] our job,” he said.
The exciting win last week should help the team going into this week’s game. Defensive Line Coach Derrick Anderson expects the same excitement throughout the next couple games.
“I think Carl Albert really set us straight, but now everyone is excited to play,” Anderson said. “We have gotten everybody pretty much healthy that we are going to have for the rest of the year, which is a great thing. Keeping them healthy is a great thing.”
Stillwater takes on NW Classen at 7 p.m. in the SYFCA and First Responders game.
