Stillwater will host its very own LexiCon for the first time since 2019 on Oct 24-26. LexiCon is a mini comic event for fans of comic books, sci-fi, gaming, cosplay, anime and pop culture where people can dress up as their favorite characters, meet fellow fans and buy from different vendors.
According to visitstillwater.org, this year’s LexiCon will be bigger and better than the first LexiCon five years ago. More events, such as a cosplay contest and a “LexiConcert,” will be held in the Stillwater Community Center. There will also be a Tetris tournament at the Stillwater Public Library that will include Stillwater’s own, freshman Willis Gibson.
In between events, event goers are free to walk around the convention and check out the more than 40 vendors and panels in attendance.
Barry Fuxa, Stillwater Public Schools PR and Communications Director, is one of the organizers of the event and said it has been a collaborative effort by everyone to put the convention together again. Fuxa said he’s been helping with the marketing, social media and graphics for the event.
“As a person who’s attended and exhibited at other cons, I’ve also provided the committee with a participant’s perspective during the planning process,” he said.
Stillwater High School senior Joey Nelson said he’s excited to see what people will cosplay as at the event.
“One year someone put a box TV on their head and had it wired to make images on the screen and everything,” Nelson said. “I plan to cosplay, probably as a plague doctor, and I’m just excited about Lexicon itself. I haven’t been in a few years.”
SHS Junior Mara Fortney is working the event with her friends.
“I’m excited to work the event with my friends to help everything go smoothly and see all the cosplays everyone worked so hard on,” Fortney said. “I am not planning to cosplay, but there’s a good chance I might appear jester-esque just for the fun of it.”
Since LexiCon will be held at the community center, Fuxa worked with SHS art teacher Ms. Peters to use the SHS art display to highlight student works. He said the art class also created a couple of projects that aligned with the comic and pop culture themes of the convention.
