At Stillwater High School, Richard Martinez has one of the coolest jersey collections around. What started as a fun hobby has turned into a huge collection that shows his love for sports and the memories he shares with his family.
Martinez explains that his dad was the one who first inspired him to start collecting jerseys.
“He had a lot of them when I was growing up, and that got me into it,” Martinez said.
His collection started in 2021, when he started finding NFL jerseys for cheap.
“I kept getting more and more, and my collection just grew,” Martinez said.
Now, he has around 50 jerseys in total. When asked which one is his favorite, he laughed, saying it’s tough to pick just one.
“It’s like picking a favorite child,” Martinez said.
Though the decision was tough, his pinstripe Astros jersey is definitely one of his top picks. Richard also has a few jerseys that are extra special. His most valuable jersey is an autographed Jose Lima Astros jersey.
“It’s something I’ll never wear, but it means a lot to me,” he said.
He’s also spent some money on his collection.
“The most I’ve spent on a jersey was $120, and it was totally worth it,” Martinez said. For him, it’s not just about the price, it’s about finding something that adds meaning to his collection.
Looking ahead, Martinez has a big goal.
“I want to get at least one jersey from every major sports team,” he said.
Martinez’s collection isn’t just about jerseys, it’s about the meaning behind them. As his collection grows, it’s clear that it’s something that will keep inspiring him and others for a long time.
