More than 60 students participated in a blood drive hosted by FCCLA on Wednesday. Ms. Webber, who coordinated the event with her classes, said that number almost doubled the number from last year.
Webber said this annual event has a great purpose.
“We are doing this blood drive to save lives,” she said.
Students were required to sign up in advance, and many teachers participated earlier in the day. The enthusiasm about the event points to a growing awareness regarding the importance of blood donation, especially in the face of recent tragedies that include a devastating hurricane, which has left hundreds missing and needing assistance.
“I usually give blood,” Mrs. Webber said. “I’m a universal blood donor, so my blood can be given to anybody. I give a lot, especially with the hurricane happening and the current need for blood donations.”
Among those who signed up to donate was senior student Sam Waits.
Asked about his motivation for donating, Waits said, “I’m donating for NHS points,” referring to the National Honor Society, which rewards students for community service.
The blood drive reminds students of the power of community action and the individual spirit of making a difference. Having almost doubled the number of participants from last year, the event shows a positive trend toward serving people in crisis.
