Stillwater High School teachers are competing and having fun through their friendly competitive Fantasy Football league that they began last year.
Coach Tanner Rivera started the league last year to have a better way to get to know other teachers around the school.
“Its really fun having a different way to interact with your colleagues and it’s also a better way to get to know people,” Rivera said.
Being the reigning champ, Rivera feels he has a target on his back.
“Everyone’s always excited when they beat me,” Rivera said. “Ms. Janloo beat me a couple weeks ago and told her students about beating me, so it definitely feels like people are going after me this year and they’re going hard.”
Tensions have begun to get higher and higher now that the regular season is nearing the end. Teachers strive to win each week to stack on W’s to be in first place. The loser of the league gets pied in the face, while the winner brings in the homemade trophy.
Ms. Janloo, whose squad is powerful according to her opponents, shows her competitiveness being a contender in the league.
“I like the competitiveness of it,” Janloo said. “I’m a pretty big competitor, and I like to have something to look forward to every week and hopefully lay the smack down on some people,” Janloo said.
She believes she has improved from last year’s Fantasy Football season when she first started.
“I like my team a lot this year compared to last year,” she said. “Last year I was a rookie and a newbie. I learned a lot through that, and this year I feel I drafted better players.”
After spectating from afar, when the league needed new contenders, Ms. Jody Webber stepped up to the draft board.
“I knew that teachers had done it last year, and when they were looking for a group of teachers last year I thought that was fun,” Webber said.
The teachers contain their friendly trash talk to have a little more fun, according to Webber.
“Maybe [trash talk] behind their back, but not hateful stuff,” Webber said. “I know for me I’m kind of like, ‘Come on, I got to beat Coach Brown,’ or like, ‘Man, I just lost to Janloo.’ That was early on, but it’s just fun. I do the little push the button thing to talk trash on the app.”
