Seven years after its announcement, Netflix released their anime adaptation of the legendary franchise Devil May Cry. Set in an alternate universe from the main series, we follow the main protagonist Dante as he fights enemies, both old and new to the franchise.
Some of the best parts of the show is the action, music and comedy, just like the main series. Netflix did really well in creating a show that grasps the vibe of Devil May Cry. The weird, but funny, quips from characters was a highlight of the show. There were also a lot of amazing cameos of old characters from the series, as well as references to other Capcom games.
There was sadly a lot about this show that I didn’t enjoy, and there were a lot of decisions made that did not fit the series. There was one character that would excessively swear, which is extremely out of character for her in the mainline series. The biggest problem I found with the show was the political influence. A major plot point was largely based on real world political issues and had no need to be involved in the show. The games are all supposed to be funny and filled with action, and adding politics was completely unnecessary.
If you can get past the large influence present in the show, I’d fully recommend the Devil May Cry Anime. The action, comedy, references, cameos and more make the show extremely enjoyable and make for a great laugh. And if you do watch and enjoy the show, you should absolutely play the games as well.
