Pioneer Post reporter Martin Aguilera interviewed Stillwater District Teacher of the Year Mr. Porter about his accomplishments.
Q: How do you feel about being Teacher of the Year?
A: It is an incredible honor to be selected as Teacher of the Year. Stillwater is an amazing place. I am surrounded by outstanding teachers and principals. The students here are accomplishing great things.
Q: Why do you stick to pen and paper?
A: When it comes to teaching math I am a step guy. I demonstrate and teach all the steps that lead you to solve a problem. Students learn so much better when they are involved in the process.
Q: What pushed you to become a teacher ?
A: When I first started teaching I was fortunate to have great role models. I really appreciate the veteran teachers who took the time to pour into me.
Q: Where did you go to school?
A: I grew up in Cleveland, Oklahoma and went to high school there. I moved to Stillwater and graduated from Oklahoma State University.
Q: What other schools have you taught at?
A: Besides Stillwater High School I have taught at Oklahoma State University and at Northern Oklahoma College.
Q: What was your reaction to being Teacher of the Year?
A: I was blown away. I am so glad to be a part of this high school. Everyone here is family. We truly care for each other and are always there to support each other. The positive atmosphere we have built here is remarkable.
