With the recent government shutdown, millions of Americans had their SNAP benefits taken away, making it hard for them to get groceries. However, Stillwater STUCO is running a fundraiser making meals for those being affected by the recent shutdown.
Ms. Searcy Crow, who runs STUCO, knew the government shutdown would affect students, as many of them rely on these benefits.
“One-sixth of Oklahomans are receiving SNAP benefits, so many students in my class would be in need,” Crow said.
The fundraiser is a collaboration with school nurse Ms. Johnson. Students are encouraged to donate items to Crow’s room, 107, or at the Nurse’s office at the front of the school.
As of November 10, the government has been reopened after almost 50 days; however, the SNAP benefits have yet been talked about going back to normal after the shutdown, still leaving many in distress.
Senior Cameron Lang has mentioned that the fundraiser is still ongoing.
“It will still be nice to get donations even with the shutdown being open,” she said.
Senior Ella Robinson said the project is important to the students that go to this school that worry they might not have anything to eat after school.
“I’m hoping it impacts them just like if they did have SNAP benefits,” Robinson said.
