To celebrate the upcoming release “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” I feel like it was best to look back at the last two films in the Sonic the Hedgehog film saga. “Sonic the Hedgehog,” released in 2020, and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” released in 2022.
Admittedly, the first movie is not that special compared to the sequel. Despite that, it is still a fun watch for families. The movie has a lot of fun action and likable characters to keep the kids entertained. Sonic the Hedgehog, played by Ben Schwartz, and Robotnik, played by the legendary actor Jim Carry, both steal the show and are quite enjoyable. The main problems I have about this movie are the humor and the characters who aren’t Sonic and Eggman. The comedy in this movie, and the whole franchise, are easily the weakest part of the whole film. Some jokes dredge from kind of funny to a little annoying. And the other human characters, like Tom and Maddie, are pretty uninteresting for the most part. But overall, “Sonic the Hedgehog” is a good watch for general audiences and fans of the Sonic franchise.
Two years later, because the film did so well, it got a sequel. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” was a massive improvement over the first movie. The action and characters are tons better with the addition of Tails, Knuckles and the master Emerald. The human characters are put aside for the characters we want to see. Dr. Robotnik also got an upgrade. He went from having a full head of hair to being pure bald with a long mustache just like in the games. The only thing I don’t like about this movie is that even though the humans are in the movie a lot less, they still have scenes that slow down the movie. Despite that, the movie has so much to love about it and leaves so much room for more future movies.
While we’re at it, let’s also talk about the “Knuckles” mini-series on Paramount Plus. To be honest, this is the weakest entry in the series so far. The CGI and action are executed pretty well, but the show suffers from forgettable villains, a lame plot and boring side characters. And the worst part is that Knuckles is barely the main character and got sidelined in his own show. While not completely awful, it’s overall a disappointing show with not much to offer at all.
Overall, the Sonic movies have a lot of soul and effort put into them. They’re a lot of fun and very entertaining to watch. I am looking forward to the future of this franchise and the December release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
